The Eurovision Song Contest has a reputation for cheesy, camp, over the top and downright ridiculous entries, but there have been exquisite gems too. This countdown looks back on 60 of the finest songs performed as part of the ESC spanning the years 1956 to 2017.

The first song to win Eurovision was performed in French by Lys Assia who passed away in March aged 94. She represented Switzerland again in 1957 and 1958.

"Zbudi Se" translates as "Wake Up" and was performed in Slovene by Tanja Ribic. She achieved a Top 10 ranking .

"Eg A Lif" is Icelandic for "I'm Alive". The stirring ballad was performed by Eythor Ingi Gunnlaugsson.

This song is the only entry from San Marino that has qualified for the Grand Final. It was the 3rd consecutive time Valentina Monetta represented the tiny republic.

Dressed sharply in his suit, Italian singer Marco Mengoni cast his spell over the Eurovision audience with "L'Essenziale"  ("The Essential"), a song he co-wrote. It landed in 7th place.

ISABELLE AUBRET
FRANCE 1968
Isabelle Aubret had won Eurovision for France in 1962 but returned with "La Source". It was co-written by Guy Bonnet who would represent France himself twice. He is further up on this list with 1 of the 2 songs. "La Source" finished 3rd out of a field of 17 competitors.

O MIE
ALIONA MOON
MOLDOVA 2013
Moldovan singer Aliona Moon performed "O Mie" ("A Thousand") in 2013. She had been the backing singer for Pasha Parfeny the previous year. He co-wrote "O Mie" which Moon sang in Romanian.

AUSTRIA 2016
Zoe co-wrote "Loin D'Ici" (French for "Far From Here") which remains Austria's best post-Conchita Wurst performing entry at Eurovision.
