WHAT’S GOING ON
MARVIN GAYE
1971

Social issues such as the struggle for civil rights have long been a theme for soul and R&B music. Marvin Gaye delivered the genres' most significant album when he dropped his 'What's Going On' album.
He had felt constrained as Motown's Prince of Pop. Gaye was keen to tackle serious issues. He was particularly inspired by his brother Frankie's experiences fighting the war in Vietnam. Label boss Berry Gordy Jr. was opposed to the concept of the album, but Gaye remained resolute. The end result vindicated the singer. Motown had never released a more important album.
Gaye's LP deals with themes such as environmental issues, injustice and drugs. He  co-wrote each track and uses his considerable vocal skill to accentuate his concern.
Standout songs include the title track, "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)". Motown and soul would never be the same again.
