These songs are well known but you may not know about the
earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
Apache
The Shadows scored a #1 hit single with "Apache" in 1960. It was one of the defining instrumentals of the Sixties. "Apache" was originally slated for Bert Weedon, but his version was delayed. It was finally issued around the same time as The Shadows' single. In the end, the group's take fared better on the UK chart and internationally.
