Don McLean's "American Pie" was released in 1971. Ever since, its lyrics have been pored over. Decades of studying its verses have produced theories and references to Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, The Beatles and the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly. McLean throws in religious references too. 
In the end, the lengthy song still engages because it is an irresistible sing-a-long tune. "American Pie" remains one of the most unique recordings in rock music. Not even a woeful remake by Madonna in 2000 could diminish its impact as a watershed song.
