These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Working In A Coal Mine

Devo released "Working In A Coal Mine" in 1981. The new wave track proved particularly popular in Australia and New Zealand where it reached #20 and #8 respectively.

The original version was a #8 hit on both sides of the Atlantic for American R&B / pop performer  Lee Dorsey. His single was issued in 1966. It was written by Allen Toussaint who also co-produced Dorsey's take. So, rather than Devo recording the bigger hit version, its remake introduced a new generation to the song.
