These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
I Feel For You
Chaka Khan scored one of the earliest R&B / pop hits to feature rap when "I Feel For You" hit the charts around the world. In 1984, the song was the title track of the singer's album.
Her version was a radical departure from the original recorded by its writer, Prince. He included the track on his self-titled 2nd studio album. 'Prince' was issued in 1979.
Khan's remake featured a guest rap from Melle Mel and samples Stevie Wonder's 1963 US #1 single "Fingertips". As well as reaching #3 Pop in the USA, the disc topped the Dance and R&B charts. In Britain, the single reached #1. It made the Top 10 in Canada, Australia and Europe.
Prior to Khan's remake, "I Feel For You" had been covered by The Pointer Sisters for the trio's 1982 album 'So Excited'. Rebbie Jackson also recorded a version for her 1984 LP 'Centipede'.
