RUSSIANS
“…We share the same biology, regardless of ideology.
What might save us,
me & you,
is if the Russians
love their children too...
The Cold War dominated politics around the world when Sting released "Russians" in 1985. It was included on his debut solo album 'The Dream Of The Blue Turtles'. Issued as a single that year, it reached the Top 20 in America, Britain, Europe and Australia.
Tension was high at the time between the Soviet Union and the United States. There had been bluster between its 2 leaders: Krushchev and Reagan. Either country could obliterate nations around the globe with nuclear weapons.
Sting's song emphasizes the similarities between the 2 superpowers. He chooses to ignore the ideological differences between the Communist and Capitalist rivals. Sting suggests that what will resolve the Cold War is if both nations care about their children. The only way to ensure the survival of their families is to avoid nuclear war.
Sadly, the song's lyrics are still pertinent today with the increasing hostility between the U.S.A. and North Korea. Hopefully, Sting's premise will prevail once again.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
