GETHSEMANE
(I ONLY WANT TO SAY)
“…I only want to say,
if there is a way,
take this cup away from me,
for I don’t want to
taste its poison....
In 1970, the concept album version of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' was issued. Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the music for Tim Rice's lyrics. One of the musical's most powerful songs is "Gethsemane". At this moment in the production, Jesus finds himself alone in the Garden of Gethsemane facing the realization of the horrors awaiting him the following day. He has just come from His Last Supper. It is the night before Good Friday. One of his apostles has betrayed him and he will be facing execution.
Understandably, the impending Passion has him wishing the inevitable could be avoided. By the end of "Gethsemane", Jesus accepts his destiny and the sacrifice he is about to endure.
The song has been recorded by a number of performers. One of the most moving is Michael Crawford's interpretation on his 1991 album 'Michael Crawford Performs Andrew Lloyd Webber'.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
