Sam Cooke's song "A Change Is Gonna Come" may not have been a major chart hit, but its historical significance has grown over the passing decades.

The song was issued in 1964. Cooke's lyrics deal with the hardships experienced by African-Americans at the time. It was soon adopted as a civil rights anthem. 

Cooke's verses describe a variety of struggles, but there is an optimistic note. The influential soul vocalist sees a brighter future for his community.
