FATHER AND SON
“…If they were right,
I’d agree,
but it’s them they know, not me.
Now there’s a way & I know
I have to go away...
Cat Stevens wrote "Father And Son" and performed it as 2 different protagonists. The first verses are sung from the point of view of the father. Next, the lyrics give the son's perspective.
The imaginative ballad deals with the generation gap. Beginning with the wiser older voice, this character is offering advice, telling his son what he ought to do. On the other hand, the youthful character is frustrated by his parent's lack of understanding. He feels unheard and realizes the only solution is for him to leave.
"Father And Son" was included on Stevens' 1970 album 'Tea For The Tillerman'. A number of remakes have been recorded, including a worldwide hit cover version by Boyzone in 1995 which peaked at #2 in Britain.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
