Donny Hathaway composed the music for "Someday We'll All Be Free". The powerful lyrics were provided by Edward Howard. It was soon adapted as an anthem for the civil rights movement in the 1970s.
The empowering verses encourage self-respect in the struggle for equality and social cohesion. Throughout, the protagonist is optimistic about a future where African-Americans can co-exist with the white population.
Hathaway's original remains definitive. It was included on his 1973 album 'Extension Of A Man'. The inspiring soul song has been covered by others, most notably by Alicia Keys and Aretha Franklin.
