THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND
“…Like a circle in a spiral,
like a wheel within a wheel,
never ending or beginning,
on an ever spinning reel.
As the images unwind,
like the circles that you find
in the windmills
of your mind...
The winner of the 1968 Academy Award for Best Original Song was "The Windmills Of Your Mind". The song was featured in the film 'The Thomas Crown Affair' starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.
The music was composed by Michel Legrand. English lyrics were penned by the husband and wife team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman.
As the 2 began writing, they settled on the first word: "round...". This led the couple to incorporate images of circular objects: an apple, a clock, a wheel, the moon etc.
In the film, the song served to capture the anxiety felt by Thomas Crown as he flew his glider. Noel Harrison sang the film version of "The Windmills Of Your Mind". A remake in 1999 updated the spellbinding song. Sting performed the cover version.
Over the years, a wide range of recording acts have released interpretations of the song. Among the best are covers by Dusty Springfield, Barbra Streisand, Alison Moyet and Tina Arena.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
