KILLING ME SOFTLY WITH HIS SONG
“…I felt he’d found my letters
& read each one out loud.
I prayed that he would finish,
but he just kept right on,
strumming my pain
with his fingers,
singing my life
with his words,
killing me softly
with his song...
Ever heard a song and thought the lyrics described you or your life? That's what inspired the writing of "Killing Me Softly With His Song".
Singer Lori Lieberman was struck by a Don McLean performance she attended. She recounted her experience to songwriters Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox. The 2 created the song for her to record.
Lieberman's original version flopped as a single. The song might have faded into obscurity had Roberta Flack not heard it as part of the in-flight entertainment while on a plane. She loved the title and the concept. Flack herself re-tweaked the arrangement.
Flack's version was issued in 1973. It reached #1 in America, Canada and Australia. The recording also earned Gimbel and Fox the Grammy Award for Song of the Year.
"Killing Me Softly" was covered famously by The Fugees. In 1996, this hip hop remake returned the song to the top of the charts. It reached #1 in Europe, Britain, Australia and New Zealand. In the U.S., the cover version peaked at #2.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
