IMAGINE
John Lennon
(1971) #1
The defining moment in John Lennon’s post-Beatles recording output, “Imagine” dares us to consider a world where our differences no longer exist, just a common humanity. Its lyrics have continued to resonate over subsequent decades. The single reached #1 in Canada, Australia and South Africa. It peaked at #3 in America. In 1981, in the wake of Lennon’s assassination, the song was re-released, finally topping the British chart.

GOOD VIBRATIONS
Beach Boys
(1966) #1
When it was unleashed, this single raised the bar in terms of production. The watershed track widened the sonic soundscape. Brian Wilson, the group’s main songwriter, doggedly had a vision and painstakingly endeavoured to bring it to full fruition. The classic topped the charts in America, Britain, Malaysia, Rhodesia and New Zealand.
