STEVE WINWOOD
Even before achieving success as a soloist, Steve Winwood played a significant role in British rock as a member of bands such as Blind Faith, Traffic and The Spencer Davis Group.
He was born in 1948 and was playing musical instruments as a child. In 1963, Steve and his brother Muff were among the founding members of the Spencer Davis Group. The band scored the hits "Somebody Help Me", "Gimme Some Lovin'", "I'm A Man" and "Keep On Running". Despite being a teenager, lead singer Steve Winwood's blue-eyed gritty soul proved convincing.
He quit the group in 1967 to form Traffic. Debut single "Paper Sun" was followed by the 'Mr Fantasy' album. Conflict with band member Dave Mason precipitated the termination of the band in 1969.
Next, Winwood formed super group Blind Faith with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. The outfit caved in to high expectations. Winwood left and eventually re-formed Traffic. The re-union lasted until 1974.
A solo album emerged in 1977. The public responded better to his next release: 1980's 'Arc Of A Diver'. This album peaked at #3 in America, buoyed by the hit single "While You See A Chance". The 'Talking Back To The Night' LP followed 2 years later.
1986's 'Back In The High Life' was a Top 10 smash album featuring the US #1 single "Higher Love" which collected the Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
'Roll With It' was released in 1988. This became Winwood's 1st solo US #1 album. The title track gave the musician his 2nd American chart-topping single. While the hits have since stopped, Winwood continues to record and perform live.
