RUNNING SCARED
“…All at once,
he was standing there.
So sure of himself,
his head in the air.
My heart was breaking,
which one would it be?
You turned around &
walked away with me...
In the Roy Orbison song "Running Scared", the vocalist builds up the drama throughout. We find a man filled with anxiety. He is in love with a woman. He dreads the idea of them bumping into her ex. Overflowing with pessimism, the protagonist expects the worst. He is certain that if his partner was to encounter her ex, she would abandon their new relationship.
Suddenly, his nightmare eventuates. The new couple come across her ex. Brimming with self - confidence, he is the polar opposite of the protagonist.
In 1961, the song was released. It topped the US chart. Orbison penned the operatic pop/ rock ballad with Joe Melson.
By the song's conclusion, to the protagonist's dismay, his girlfriend walks away. She has made a choice. Ignoring her ex, she leaves with the protagonist.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
