One Direction formed in 2010, when each of the members competed individually in the 7th season of the UK's "The X Factor". It was suggested that the 5 soloists form a boyband. They progressed to the finals, finishing 3rd.
Simon Cowell signed the group to his Syco label. "What Makes You Beautiful", One Direction's debut single, was unleashed to eager fans in 2011. It reached #1 in Britain and made the Top 10 in America, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. 'Up All Night', the group's 1st album, topped the US chart. More Top 10 hits followed: "Gotta Be You", "One Thing" and "Live While We're Young". The latter was the lead single from sophomore album 'Take Me Home', which topped the US and UK charts. It contained the British #1 single "Little Things".
Charity disc "One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)" raced to #1 in the UK. It preceded the group's next US & UK #1 album, 'Midnight Memories' in 2013. 'Four' did the same in 2014.
1D was part of the Band Aid 30 recording of "Do They Know It's Christmas?", a charity single that reached the top in Britain and also featured Bastille, Bono, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Paloma Faith.
In 2015, the group issued 'Made In The A.M.', its 4th consecutive UK #1 album, containing 1D's 4th chart-topping single, "Drag Me Down". By now, Zayn Malik had quit the group to focus on a solo career.
Around this time, the boyband announced it would be on hiatus. Singles "Perfect" and "History" remain the most recent releases from the group.
All of the remaining members have since enjoyed solo Top 10 hits: Louis Tomlinson ("Just Hold On" and "Back To You"); Harry Styles ("Sign Of The Times"); Niall Horan ("This Town" and "Slow Hands") and Liam Payne ("Strip That Down").
