RAY CHARLES
Ray Charles Robinson was born in 1930 and lost his sight at the age of 6. He was orphaned at a young age. Despite these setbacks, as Ray Charles, he radically transformed popular music and played the most significant role in the creation of soul music.
Before reaching the age of 20, Ray was recording. In 1951, "Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand" became his 1st solo Top 10 hit. His genius became apparent once he signed with Atlantic Records. "I Got A Woman" topped the US R&B Chart in 1955. "A Fool For You" and "Drown In My Own Tears" repeated that feat.
In 1959, Charles released his landmark disc "What'd I Say". This recording combined gospel's call & response with rock 'n roll and R&B. It was his 1st Pop Chart Top 10 disc and returned Ray to #1 on the R&B equivalent.
He fused country with his brand of soul music on the 1960 hit single "Georgia On My Mind". It topped the American Pop Chart. The following year, he came back to #1 Pop and R&B with "Hit The Road Jack". He did it again in 1962 with "I Can't Stop Loving You". His other significant tracks include: "Unchain My Heart", "Busted", "That Lucky Old Sun" and "Let's Go Get Stoned".
Charles continued recording during the 1970s and 80s, reaching #1 in 1989 with "I'll Be Good To You", a collaboration with Quincy Jones and Chaka Khan. He was also a featured vocalist on the U.S.A. For Africa charity disc "We Are The World".
In 2004, Charles released a duets album entitled 'Genius Loves Company'. This project featured partners such as Elton John, Gladys Knight and B.B. King. The album reached #1 in America and Canada.
On June 10, 2004 Ray - aged 73- died of liver disease. Shortly after, the biopic 'Ray'- with Jamie Foxx in the title role- was an Oscar winner. Posthumous albums followed, including a 2nd duets compilation.
Ray's impact on R&B and soul can never be overstated. His influence is evident in the music of performers such as Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Joe Cocker and Van Morrison.
