NATALIE COLE
As the daughter of the groundbreaking and legendary Nat 'King' Cole, expectations were high for Natalie Cole once she made the decision to pursue a musical career.
She was born in 1950 in Los Angeles. Her stage debut was at 11 years of age. Cole's career reached a major turning point in 1973 when she met songwriter/ producers Chuck Jackson and Marvin Lancey. They created a series of successful singles for the young singer, beginning with "This Will Be" in 1975. The song peaked at #6 Pop and topped the R&B chart. Cole collected 2 Grammy Awards following its success: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best New Talent.
She scored more US R&B #1 singles in the 1970s: "Inseparable", "Sophisticated Lady", "I've Got Love On My Mind" and "Our Love". Cole veered towards the adult contemporary genre in the 1980s with the ballads "I Live For Your Love" and "Miss You Like Crazy" (another R&B #1). In 1988, she covered Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac" which parked itself in the Top 10 in America, Britain, Canada, Australia and some European countries.
In 1990, Cole was included on the 'Pretty Woman' movie soundtrack with the song "Wild Women Do". The following year, she enjoyed her biggest success. 'Unforgettable... With Love' was a tribute album to her father's songbook. It reached #1 in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. Cole's posthumous duet with her father on "Unforgettable" was a key track with a moving music video. She took home Grammy Awards for Record and Album of the Year as well as Best Traditional Pop Performance.
Cole released other jazz-themed and 2 Christmas albums before the end of the century. She regularly recorded in the new millennium, including 'Natalie Cole En Español' in 2013. This, her 23rd studio album, was to be her last. Cole died of congestive heart failure on December 31, 2015. She was aged 65.
