BEN E. KING
His voice has illuminated some of R&B’s seminal and most cherished songs. Benjamin Earl Nelson was born in 1938. At the age of 20, the American performer joined The Five Crowns. This group was refashioned as a new line-up of The Drifters.
The new Drifters were teamed up with producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Nelson co-wrote "There Goes My Baby" which introduced the world to the lush quality of his voice. The group went on to record other soul classics, including "Save The Last Dance For Me" and "I Count The Tears".
Nelson began using the moniker Ben E. King around the time he quit the vocal group over payment and royalties. In 1961, "Spanish Harlem" became his solo debut single, reaching the Top 10. King co-wrote the follow-up, the radio staple "Stand By Me". He continued working and recording until his death in 2015.
