"Hound Dog" was released as an Elvis Presley single in 1956. It is sometimes listed as a double A- side with "Don't Be Cruel". Initially, it reached #2 in America and Britain in its own right.
The original version of the song was issued in 1952. This was recorded by R&B performer Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton. Her version spent 7 weeks at #1 on the US R&B Chart. The song was penned by hit-makers Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller.
