Eurovision celebrated its 60th birthday in Vienna, following the popular win for Conchita Wurst in 2014. To mark the occasion, Australia was invited to participate. In order to not deny the other nations an opportunity to qualify for the Grand Final, the entry from Down Under automatically progressed to the Grand Final, where it finished in 5th place. Australia's participation cast the ESC net further out from the European continent than it ever had in the Contest's history.
The 1st Semi-Final was won by Russia's "A Million Voices". Sweden gained the highest score in Semi-Final 2.
At the Grand Final, a record-breaking 27 countries competed. "Heroes" performed by Mans Zelmerlöw claimed a 6th victory for Sweden, putting the country in 2nd place for the most wins at Eurovision. Only Ireland has notched up more victories- 7.
For the first time, the host nation failed to earn a single point in the voting.
