Females infiltrated the once misogynistic world of rap as it evolved into hip-hop. New Jack Swing gave way to New Jill Swing. Grunge exploded around the world. The music industry grappled with dwindling sales and the threat of piracy. CRAZY Seal

Issued in late 1990, British performer Seal's debut hit "Crazy" introduced his own hybrid of soul, dance and funk to a global audience. It topped the European chart and made the Top 10 in Britain, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Trevor Horn produced the single.

BITCH Meredith Brooks

Women were a dominant force in rock music during the 1990s. American Meredith Brooks was part of the wave, thanks largely to her 1997 debut release "Bitch". The  track peaked at #2 in America, Canada and Australia.

COUNTRY HOUSE Blur

Blur was the 90s' Kinks in Britpop. "Country House" was a hit in 1995 for the band. The British single was lifted off the group's 'The Great Escape' album and became the 1st of 2 #1 singles in the UK for Blur.

ALL I WANNA DO Sheryl Crow

The Grammy Award winning "All I Wanna Do" was Sheryl Crow's breakthrough single. In 1994, the American musician scored a #1 disc in Canada and Australia. The alternative country hit also proved successful in the USA, UK and Europe.

LOVE REARS ITS UGLY HEAD Living Color

"Love Rears Its Ugly Head" was a single unleashed in 1990. Living Colour's sound was a mix of metal, hard rock, funk, R&B and indie. The track was included on the band's 'Time's Up' album.

FROM THIS MOMENT ON Shania Twain

Canadian artist Shania Twain almost single-handedly  re-ignited pop/ country's crossover appeal in 1997. Her 'Come On Over' album proved a major seller. "From This Moment On" reached the Top 10 in America, Britain and Australia.

THE FLY U2

Irish rock band U2 adopted a new sound on "The Fly". The 1991 track incorporated industrial elements, post-punk rock and indie sounds. The track topped the British and Australian charts and was included on the adventurous album 'Achtung Baby'.

Celine Dion performed "My Heart Will Go On" for the box office and Oscar-sweeping cinematic epic 'Titanic'. Released in 1997, the mighty ballad sailed to #1 in America, Britain, Europe, Canada and Australia.

The 90s boy band craze resulted in a string of singles for American group Backstreet Boys. In 1999, the hit reached the top in the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

KILLING ME SOFTLY The Fugees

The world first became aware of Lauryn Hill in 1996 when The Fugees released a remake of Roberta Flack's 1973 hit single "Killing Me Softly With His Song". The cover version reached #1 in Britain, Australia and Europe and was lifted off the group's 'The Score' album. The Fugees also included Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel.
