BULLETS WITH BUTTERFLY WINGS
“…The world is a vampire
 sent to drain...
Billy Corgan, lead singer of The Smashing Pumpkins, wrote "Bullets With Butterfly Wings", one of the most insightful and relatable tracks of the 1990s.
Its lyrics obviously touched a chord with the Generation X audience, enthusiastically embracing the chorus: "despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage".
The song has elements of punk and grunge, fuelled by anger. It was included on the group's 'Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness'. Both the single and its parent album came out in 1995.

GLEN CAMPBELL
During the 1970s, Glen Campbell became one of the leading figures in the country / pop genre. The American was born in 1936 and learned to play the guitar from the age of 4. He started performing in bands during his teens. As a young adult, he developed a reputation as a competent session musician, playing for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and The Beach Boys.
His solo aspirations began bearing fruit first on the country chart in the late 1960s. "Wichita Lineman" was his 2nd #1 on that listing and became his 1st major pop crossover hit. Campbell was soon a regular on the Top 40, with singles such as "Galveston", "Try A LIttle Kindness", "Bonaparte's Retreat" and his 2 US #1 Pop singles "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights".
Over recent decades, the recordings grew rarer. In 2011, the 75 year old Campbell revealed that he had Alzheimer's Disease. A farewell tour followed. The documentary 'Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me' was released in 2014. Its soundtrack included the moving song "I'm Not Gonna Miss You". A final album entitled 'Adios' was issued in 2017.

WHAT MAKES A MAN
“…The answers come from
 those who make,
the rules that some of us
 must break,
 just to keep living.
I know my life is not a crime,
I’m just a victim of my time...
French music veteran Charles Aznavour penned "What Makes A Man" in its original French version "Comme Il Disent".
It is a snapshot of life as a Continental gay man. The song describes his home life, cohabitating with his mother and an assortment of pets. He works as a female impersonator, before catching up with his friends in the early hours of the morning. The protagonist recounts the subjects of their conversations, before the mood switches. Now the lyrics deal with the loneliness in his loveless life and the discrimination targetted towards him.
The frankness of the song remains impactful, decades since its release in 1972. Marc Almond (formerly of Soft Cell) covered the song in 1993.

DIRE STRAITS
English rock band Dire Straits formed in 1977. The original line-up featured lead singer / guitarist Mark Knopfler, his brother David and roommate bassist John Illsey. A year later, the trio unleashed its self-titled debut LP. It proved successful internationally, even topping the charts in Australia and reaching the Top 5 in America, Europe, Britain and Canada.
In 1982, 'Love Over Gold' made #1 in the UK and Australia. It contained the singles "Private Investigations" and "Industrial Disease". Follow-up 'Brothers In Arms' was issued 3 years later. This proved to be the band's zenith, reaching #1 in numerous countries, including the U.S.A. "Money For Nothing" was lifted off the LP and made #1 in North America.
Dire Straits lay dormant for many years following that album until 'On Every Street' emerged in 1991. The group then disbanded in 1995. Mark Knopfler has since been releasing solo albums.

AS TEARS GO BY
“…I sit & watch the children play.
Doin’ things I used to do,
 they think are new.
 I sit & watch
 as tears go by...
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards created "As Tears Go By" for singer Marianne Faithfull to record. Her version went Top 10 in Britain.
The Rolling Stones then recorded their own version of the ballad in 1965.On the US Chart, the disc peaked at #6. Both versions accentuate the detachment felt by the protagonist.

COLD CHISEL
Australian rock band Cold Chisel formed in 1973 and delivered an Aussie classic in debut single "Khe Sanh" 5 years later. The band's fortunes changed in 1979 with the release of 'Breakfast At Sweethearts'. The album was its first Top 10 hit.  In 1980, 'East' peaked at #2 and spawned the singles "Cheap Wine" and "Choir Girl". The next 3 releases topped the Album Chart in Australia: 'Swingshift', 'Circus Animals' and 'Twentieth Century'.
Cold Chisel split in 1983, at the height of its domestic success. Lead singer Jimmy Barnes pursued a solo career, as did guitarist / vocalist Ian Moss.
The group remained radio staples and Chisel finally re-formed in 1998. Other reunions followed. Steve Prestwich died in 2011. His drumming was included on some tracks on a brand new album from Cold Chisel entitled 'No Plans'. 'The Perfect Crime' followed in 2015.  Both proved the enduring popularity of the group, peaking at #2 in Australia.

PERFECT DAY
“…Just a perfect day,
 you made me forget myself.
I thought I was someone else,
someone good...
Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" begins with a promising tone. The piano builds as the lyrics outline a day's pleasant activities: drinking in a park, feeding animals at the zoo and catching a movie. As the verses unravel, the protagonist reveals his displeasure with himself. The song concludes with an ominous sense of gloom: "You're going to reap just what you sow". Reed has built up the intrigue.
The well crafted track appeared on his 'Transformer' album. Issued in 1972, it remains one of Reed's most memorable artistic creations.

RELAX - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Relax single.jpgBritish group Frankie Goes To Hollywood made a massive splash with its debut single "Relax". Unleashed in late 1983, the single initially took some time to attract attention. Once it was noticed, controversy helped sales. Its risque lyrics and the accompanying music video, set in a gay venue, resulted in a ban for both the song and the clip. All of this publicity swept the single to #1 in Britain. It was a massive hit internationally. After several remixes of "Relax", the disc is among the all-time best selling singles in UK history.
