Peter Allen co-wrote "Don't Cry Out Loud" with Carole Bayer Sager. The former recorded his own interpretation for a the 1977 album 'It's Time For Peter Allen'. The earliest version released was by soul group The Moments. Produced by Sylvia Robinson, that take was issued on the Stang label. It was included on the LP 'Moments With You'. The single only dented the lower rungs of the American chart.
Wider success was finally achieved when Melissa Manchester covered the song. Her remake became the title track of her 1979 album release. The single made the Top 10 on the American and Canadian charts.
