THE KICK INSIDE: KATE BUSH

 [1978]
Few artists impress with a collection of songs as unique as the tracks that are contained on the debut album by the young Kate Bush. Released as she entered adulthood, most of the content was penned during her teenage years. Bush's songwriting vision and talent was obvious from the outset. 'The Kick Inside' is still a body of work that marvels each new generation of listeners. There is a delicate beauty in the unique style this young performer serves here. Unleashed in more adventurous times, Bush emerged against the backdrop of other creative individuals such as David Bowie. Bush reignited the singer/ songwriter trend that had dominated the early years of the 1970s. This album was a stark contrast to the punk and disco that was attracting greater attention. Along came this other-wordly new artist, with her inventive music video for the album's major hit "Wuthering Heights". The enchantng "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" is the LP"s masterstroke. Its lyrical beauty is matched by Bush's tender vocal. Digging deeper into the album uncovers more beauty: "Oh To Be In Love", "Room For The Life" and "The Saxophone Song" remain just as potent today. "Kite" and "James And The Cold Gun" provide upbeat breaks from the softer moments. "Moving" and "Strange Phenomena" cast a spell as we are drawn further into Bush's world. Bush created a debut album that any aspiring artist can use as a blueprint.
