Rarely do debut albums come with a cover that over time becomes an iconic work of art. The Velvet Underground & Nico's eponymously titled LP was adorned with artwork by legendary pop art exponent Andy Warhol. No doubt this made the disc a talking point. The prominence of Warhol's name on the cover ensured it would help attract sales.
Initial copies of the album actually featured Warhol's banana as a sticker to peel off, revealing a new but different image of the same fruit. Today, almost half a century later, Warhol's banana album cover is arguably better known as an art piece than the public's awareness of its connection with the rock band or its recording.
