BEFORE IT WAS A HIT XXIV: Respect. Continues tomorrow.
BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG
These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
Respect
 RESPECT
Of all the songs in her stunning canon, it is for "Respect" that Aretha Franklin is best remembered. It was unleashed in 1967 and reached #1 in America. Before The Queen of Soul attacked the song with her immense vocal might, Otis Redding included it on his 1965 album 'Otis Blue'. He penned the song himself. It was released as a single that year and peaked at #5 on the R&B chart and crossed over to the Pop Top 100.
