THE WRITER/PRODUCERS
 Pt.2- The Early Years
Motown Records was a constant presence on the pop chart throughout the 1960s and continued beyond that golden era with a roster that boasted an abundance of talent. Along with its flagship acts, the label attracted creative artists that played a key role in shaping the 'Motown Sound'. The company was served well by a capable pool of songwriters and producers. Some were key architects of Motown's success and crossover appeal.
WILLIAM 'SMOKEY' ROBINSON

As well as leading the vocal group The Miracles and later launching his solo career, Smokey Robinson fast became a key figure in the success of Motown in its first few years.
Miracles-make-it-happen.jpgBerry Gordy Jr. founded the company and was astute enough to recognize the potential and talent possessed by one of the first acts he signed. Robinson came armed with a book filled with song ideas and drafts.
In little time, The Miracles were providing Motown its first major hit singles and Robinson began writing and producing for other acts on the roster. The Temptations, Mary Wells, The Marvelettes, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and Brenda Holloway all recorded compositions co-/ written by him. Among his biggest hits are: "Shop Around", "The Way You Do The Things You Do", "My Guy", "My Girl", "The Tracks Of My Tears", "Get Ready", "I Second That Emotion", "The Tears Of A Clown", "Cruisin'"and "Being With You".
Gordy valued Robinson's so much that he was promoted to Vice President of Motown in 1961, a role he kept until 1988.
