I NEVER LOVED A MAN
THE WAY I LOVE YOU:
ARETHA FRANKLIN
Aretha Franklin – I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You.jpg
 [1967]
The precise moment that saw Aretha Franklin crowned the Queen of Soul was when her awe-inspiring voice was recorded for what would become the 'I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You' album. Years at Columbia failed to untap its full potential. When Franklin switched to Atlantic Records, that mighty voice was finally set free. With Jerry Wexler as producer, the Queen held court in front of the microphone, with the Muscle Shoals session men gathered to augment the perfect combination. Decades later, this album remains not only 1 of the best albums by a female performer, but an essential R&B and pop/rock album.
The album boasts the landmark track "Respect". Everything changed after Franklin attacked that Otis Redding composition. It became her signature song and an instant anthem. There are many classic soul tracks here; some covers and some co-written by Franklin (co-writes with her then husband and/ or sister). The Queen is sassy on "Respect", romantic on the title track and sexy on "Dr Feelgood (Love Is A Serious Business)". Further into the album, the gifts keep coming: with the soulful "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" and the funky jam of "Save Me". The album closes with a cover of the Sam Cooke civil rights anthem "A Change Is Gonna Come": given a novel spin from a female perspective. Give this album a listen: your ears will be ever grateful. Highlight tracks: Respect; Save Me & I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You.
