TURNSTILES: BILLY JOEL
Billy Joel - Turnstiles.jpg
 [1976]
By the time of 'Turnstiles', Billy Joel was deserting the West Coast and relocating to his place of origin: New York City. The exodus is represented here in "Say Goodbye To Hollywood". This album finds a more confident and competent singer / songwriter, Barbra Streisand would record album track "New York State Of Mind" which lent itself so easily to a jazz interpretation. Her cover raised Joel's profile considerably. The tracks here serve a diversity of styles from the performer and his piano. The influence of Bruce Springsteen and Elton John is obvious, but Joel ensures the tracks have a cohesive sound that perfected the Joel brand on 'The Stranger' the following year. Highlight tracks: James; Say Goodbye To Hollywood & Prelude / Angry Young Man.
