Legendary women proved they were anything but a spent force in contemporary music. Aretha Franklin made a stunning return to the charts with "A Rose Is Still A Rose". Madonna took dance music down new directions with her 'Ray Of Light' album. Cher enjoyed another re-invention with "Believe". Among the new breed, former Fugees member Lauryn Hill launched her solo career with much praise and promise. The first MP3 player was commercially available in 1998.
