The definitive list of 200 songs from the movies, recorded by by rock & pop acts since the start of the Rock Era in 1955.
To be eligible, the songs need to have been first heard in association with a film from the last 60 years (although some exceptions do exist where the song gained a higher profile after its use in a motion picture)- so no songs from “West Side Story”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Les Miserables” or “The Sound Of Music” and other films that first started out as stage musicals.

 The film adaptation of the Richard Bach novella "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" fared poorly, Neil Diamond's soundtrack was a resounding chart and critical success. He collected a Golden Globe and a Grammy Award for his efforts.

 The Disney studio adaptation of the Alexander Dumas novel "The Three Musketeers" had a score by Michael Kamen. He co-wrote "All For Love" with Robert John "Mutt" Lange and Bryan Adams. Given the considerable talents of the 3 singers performing the hit song, "All For Love" ought to have been a far superior song, but it proved successful nonetheless. It reached #1 in the USA, Europe, Japan, Canada and Australia. It peaked at #2 in the UK.

A KIND OF MAGIC

Highlander (1986)
 The cult action film 'Highlander' launched the career of Christopher Lambert. Music video director Russell Mulcahy invited Queen to contribute songs for his film project. "A Kind Of Magic" reached #3 in Britain and made the Top 10 around Europe.

Madonna
(‘Evita’- 1996)
 Madonna as Eva hugging hugging Antonio Banderas as Che from behind
 Various singers and actresses had expressed interest in portraying Eva Peron in the film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice's musical "Evita". By the time it was filmed, Madonna had been selected for the title role. The 2 composers created a new song for the soundtrack: "You Must Love Me". The song won an Academy Award. Madonna delivers a dramatic vocal performance on the recording.

John Singleton's drama 'Hustle & Flow' starred Terrence Howard and featured the rap song "Hard Out Here For A Pimp". The track collected an Oscar.

David Bowie

 Along with performing 5 songs on the soundtrack album, David Bowie was the film's lead actor. 'Labyrinth' is an adventure/ fantasy motion picture.

(‘The World Is Not Enough’- 1999)
 
 Alternative rock group Garbage was a quirky choice to be given the honour of singing a Bond song, but Shirley Manson's vocals deliver an apt execution. Pierce Brosnan was 007 in this instalment of the James Bond legend.

 The magic pairing of Leonardo DiCaprio with Claire Danes was augmented by the contemporary soundtrack album for Baz Luhrmann's modern take on Shakespeare's classic love story "Romeo And Juliet". One of its highlights was Swedish group The Cardigans' pop smash "Lovefool".

Along with the big ballads "I Will Always Love You", "I Have Nothing" and "Run To You", Whitney Houston dropped a stomping remake of "I'm Every Woman" as well as the new track "Queen of the Night" on 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack album. The talented performer also co-starred in the hit film, alongside Kevin Costner.
