The definitive list of 200 songs from the movies, recorded by by rock & pop acts since the start of the Rock Era in 1955.
To be eligible, the songs need to have been first heard in association with a film from the last 60 years (although some exceptions do exist where the song gained a higher profile after its use in a motion picture)- so no songs from “West Side Story”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Les Miserables” or “The Sound Of Music” and other films that first started out as stage musicals.

A LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION
Elvis Presley
(‘Live A Little, Love A Little’- 1968)

The uber-cool of the original version of Elvis Presley's "A Little Less Conversation" had a hip 1960s production. The song was later used in the film remake of 'Ocean's Eleven' in 2001. A year later, it was remixed by JXL and became an even bigger hit for the singer.

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand starred in the title role and performed the soundtrack album for the musical drama motion picture 'Yentl'. She also directed, co-wrote the screenplay and co-produced the film project. "The Way He Makes Me Feel" is a tender love song composed by Michel Legrand with lyrics by Alan & Marilyn Bergman.

David Bowie
(‘Absolute Beginners’- 1986)

Julien Temple directed the rock musical which included among its cast performers Ray Davies (The Kinks), Sade Adu (Sade) and David Bowie. The lush title song was written and performed by the latter.

Warren Beatty directed the film version of 'Dick Tracy' which saw him co-star with Madonna. The latter performed "Sooner Or Later" which earned acclaimed songwriter Stephen Sondheim an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

(‘Urban Cowboy’- 1980)
 
Canadian country / pop singer Anne Murray fared well on the charts with another hit song from 'Urban Cowboy'. The successful film soundtrack was the third hit album to feature star John Travolta on its cover (following 'Grease' and 'Saturday Night Fever').

Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram
(‘An American Tail’- 1986)

The animated musical film 'An American Tail' included "Somewhere Out There". The ballad dealt with longing and missing loved ones. It struck a chord with audiences who took it to #2 in the USA and into the British Top 10.

 After the phenomenal success of 'Grease', re-uniting its 2 stars was a no-brainer. The film was a disappointment, but the soundtrack featured 3 chart songs for Olivia Newton-John, the biggest being "Twist Of Fate".

 Neil Diamond starred in a remake of the Al Jolson landmark film 'The Jazz Singer'. Trying to outdo one of cinema's historic milestones was always going to be a massive task. While the new version falls considerably short, its soundtrack spawned 3 chart hits for Neil Diamond: "Love On The Rocks", "Hello Again" and "America".
