Rock 'n' roll had been the music of choice for cashed up youths and a way to express the generation gap. Adults had tried to resist and restrict its appeal. By 1967, rock music was the political voice of young adults, keen to speak out about current events. There was plenty to protest about, including the Vietnam War, civil rights and the threat of nuclear war. Drug use and rock musicians were increasingly being linked. The album became more significant with the release of The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. Rock festivals bloomed. Art and rock were combined to see music further explore new directions. This was the year of the so-called "Summer of Love". 'Rolling Stone' magazine's 1st issue was unleashed.
