Now that the dust has settled on another fabulous Eurovision
Song Contest, it’s time to look back on the most important and influential
songs that have competed over the last 60 years. All of the winning songs are
included, as well as other noteworthy entries from the most watched music
contest in the world.

PUPPET ON A STRING
SANDIE SHAW
United Kingdom- 1967
The UK first appeared at
Eurovision in 1957. It finished in 7th place. In the years 1959-61,
the country claimed the runner-up position. The UK came 2nd again in
1964 and 1965. The following year saw the UK slide to #9. Sandie Shaw was a
major pop star with chart hits around the world, including 2 #1 singles in
Britain. She was convinced to represent her homeland at the ESC. Despite not
being a fan of her song, Shaw gave it her all. Performing barefoot, she
delivered the UK the Eurovision grand prix it had longed for. “Puppet on a
String” reflected the exciting pop music that was dominating the music scene
during the 1960s. Its sound marked a radical shift, proving that a pop song
could do well. It changed the style of ESC entries that followed through to the
present day. The UK entry was also the 1st winning song sung in
English. Since then, the majority of wins have gone to entries performed in
English. Everything changed with “Puppet on a String”.
