CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
THE TOP 100
#80 SORRY SEEMS TO BE THE HARDEST WORD
ELTON JOHN
(1976)
Writers: Elton John & Bernie Taupin

1976 marked a turning point for Elton John. The pop superstar had enjoyed immense success with his 1975 album releases. 'Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy' and 'Rock of the Westies' were the 1st 2 albums ever to enter the Billboard chart at #1. John announced that he was bisexual during 1976, which swiftly became a headline around the globe. Amid all of this success and controversy, he released the double album 'Blue Moves' and its lead single "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word".
Gus Dudgeon produced the recording of the heart-wrenching ballad. "Sorry..." features a tender performance on the accordion from Carl Fontina. James Newton Howard played electric piano as well as arranging and conducting the strings heard on the track.
"Sorry..." reached #1 on the American Adult Contemporary chart. On the Billboard Hot 100, the disc reached #6. The single also reached the Top 20 in Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and the Netherlands.
With his previous 6 albums all reaching #1 in the USA, the winning streak inevitably had to come to an end. 'Blue Moves' failed to make the chart summit but did go platinum and peaked at #3. 1976 again proved a turning point for John. He took a break from writing with his regular collaborator Bernie Taupin. Fortunately, they did renew their working relationship in the early 1980s and continue co-writing to this day.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the remaining Top 100 is added each weekday, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
