CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS

#172 WHAT'S GOING ON Marvin Gaye
When Marvin Gaye began work on his 'What's Going on' album, it marked a turning point in his career, his label and R&B in general. Motown boss Berry Gordy had done his best to dissuade his star male soloist. The album developed into a comment on the social issues of the times and is now lauded as a milestone album project. A major source for inspiration were the stories Gaye's brother Frankie returned from the Vietnam War with. Gaye's opus inspired Stevie Wonder to do the same on his subsequent albums. The result was a new relevance for Motown Records in the soul genre as well as pop music.
"What's Going On" began as a song idea presented to Gaye by Renaldo Benson (of The Four Tops) and Motown writer/ producer Al Cleveland. Gaye contributed to its composition and produced the track himself. Released as a single in 1971, "What's Going On" peaked at #2 Pop and #1 R&B in the US.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the Top 200 is added each day, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
