Anyone that wrote ABBA off for cheesy bubblegum like "Dum Dum Diddle", "I Am Just A Girl" or "Nina Pretty Ballerina", can be forever silenced when presented with "The Winner Takes It All". This song possesses Bjorn's best lyrics. Sitting with a bottle of whisky, he reflected on the end of his and Agnetha's marriage. Benny created a beautiful structure for the song. Its greatest asset though, is Agnetha's powerful and emotional vocal performance. Her delivery is one of pop music's most credible, as if she has embodies every word (and to a large extent, she most probably had). It's hard to imagine anyone ever improving on her dramatic interpretation. It's scary to think that for a time, Bjorn considered singing lead vocals on this! 
No doubt, long after people have forgotten "Waterloo" and "Mamma Mia" (which seems far off into the future), "The Winner Takes It All" will most likely still be lauded as an outstanding example of popular music.
