#436 THE TEARS OF A CLOWN Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
 Stevie Wonder presented some music he had composed with Henry Cosby to Smokey Robinson that was built around an intro that sounds like a carnival. The latter wrote some lyrics and the song became "The Tears of a Clown". It reached #1 at the start of 1970 in the USA, but few would be aware that it had originally been released in 1967. 
Robinson co-produced the track with Cosby for The Miracles' album 'Make It Happen'. The Motown classic would have remained an album track had Motown not issued it as a single in late 1970. The 3 year old song made the top of both the US Pop & R&B charts and #1 in Britain. In Australia, the single peaked in the Top 10. It was to be Robinson's swansong with The Miracles. He launched an enduring solo career.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice.
