CAFFE` LATTE`
TOP 1200 CHOICE TRACKS

#411 THE ONLY WAY IS UP Yazz & The Plastic Population
Few would be aware that the 80s dance hit "The Only Way Is Up" began life as an R&B song. Otis Clay recorded his bluesy soul version in 1980. George Jackson and Johnny Henderson wrote the uplifting song. In 1988, it was given a makeover by Coldcut. The team consists of DJs Jonathan More and Matt Black. The new dance interpretation was for the album 'Ahead of our Time'. The Yazz and the Plastic Population remake featured lead vocals from British singer Yazz, who was born Yasmin Evans. After a brief stint in the group The Biz, she was a catwalk model before becoming George Michael's stylist.
Her comeback to music saw her score a hit in 1988 with Coldcut entitled "Doctorin' the House". Her own hit "The Only Way Is Up" was massive internationally: reaching #1 in Britain, Europe, Ireland and New Zealand. The single peaked at #2 in Australia.
"Stand Up for Your Love Rights" followed. This release reached #2 in the UK. "Fine Time" went Top 10 in 1989. Yazz continued charting into the 1990s. She still records to this day. Her most recent album being 'This is Love' issued in 2011.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2 new songs are added each day (every 12 hours)  with a mid-week bonus every Wednesday.
