CAFFE` LATTE`
TOP 1200 CHOICE TRACKS

#585 I'M ON FIRE 5,000 Volts
If the voice on the disco hit "I'm On Fire" sounded familiar, it's because the lead singer of 5,000 Volts was Tina Charles. Their producer Tony Eyers wrote the hit song. It was initially a B-side (for "Bye Love"). DJs started playing the flip side and discovered a catchy track which attracted more attention than the A-side.
As the song gained popularity, it started charting in 1975. In Britain, it peaked at #4. The single topped the Swedish and German charts. It reached #5 in Australia and 10 in South Africa. On the US Hot 100 the single climbed to #26. Its follow-up "Doctor Kiss Kiss" returned 5,000 Volts to some charts but the group never repeated their success with "... Fire". Once Charles quit to launch her solo career, the group broke up shortly after. Martin Jay would later re-surface as a member of the groups Enigma and Tight Fit.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
To mark the occasion of reaching the halfway mark for this special countdown, a new song will be added on the hour all day today (in place of this week's Mid Week Bonus).
