#704 IF YOU GO AWAY Dusty Springfield
"If You Go Away" was originally a French song by Jacques Brel. Its Francophone title was "Ne Me Quitte Pas", a song the composer released in 1958. Eric Blau attempted to help the song crossover to English-speaking audiences, but it was not until Rod McKuen wrote his own translation of the irresistible French song, that it finally caught on. The new English lyrics were published in 1966 and since then, McKuen's words have been recorded by some of the best vocalists of all-time, including Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond and Julio Iglesias.
Dusty Springfield recorded her heart wrenching interpretation of the song for her 'Where Am I Going' album which was issued in 1967. This LP was re-titled 'The Look of Love' for American release. Brel passed away from cancer in 1978.
