#743 REACH S Club 7
They may be dismissed for recording cheesy bubblegum pop, but some of the hits from S Club 7 will put a jump in your step and a smile on your face from its sheer exuberance. "Reach" was penned and produced by Cathy Dennis with Andy Todd. Both were experienced songwriters and performers. The latter was a member of Republica, a dance / pop band that scored with "Ready to Go" in 1997. Dennis had enjoyed hits such as "Just Another Dream" and "Too Many Walls". Dennis was 1 of S Club 7's main songwriters.
The group consisted of 7 twinks, singing upbeat songs brimming with ebullience. The group formed in Britain in 1999. Their first single, "Bring it all Back", headed straight to the top that same year in the UK and became a Top 3 smash in several other countries. "S Club Party", the follow-up, proved their initial success was no fluke. "You're My Number One" became another Top 3 hit."Reach" was the first single from 2nd album '7', released in 2000. It peaked at #2 in Britain.

#744 SONGBIRD Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac's magnum opus is 'Rumours'; overflowing with brilliant compositions from the group's 3 principal songwriters: Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie. The latter was divorcing fellow band member John McVie and "Songbird" was penned by her in time for the classic album. Its lyrics are tender and raw; performed beautifully at the piano by Christine. It has perhaps been dwarfed by the more radio-friendly staples contained on the LP, but to overlook this song is to miss out on 1 of the most beautiful compositions dealing with the conclusion of a relationship.

#745 I CAN'T MAKE YOU LOVE ME Bonnie Raitt
Bonnie Raitt started playing guitar at age 12. It took her 10 albums to finally enjoy a major hit. Since the release of her debut LP in 1971, Raitt has remained a critcal success. Commercial appeal and big sales did finally come her way with the 1989 album 'Nick of Time'. She collected 4 Grammy Awards in 1990 for her effort, including Album of the Year. Follow-up LP 'Luck of the Draw' was issued in 1991. One of its tracks is the well crafted ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me". Written by country songwriters Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin, it has been covered by the likes of George Michael, Boyz II Men and Ester Dean. Raitt's version reached #18 in the US.

#746 BAKER STREET Gerry Rafferty
Scottish singer/ songwriter Gerry Rafferty first tasted success as a member of Stealer's Wheel with the memorable "Stuck in the Middle With You" in 1973. The group split 2 years later. Litigation prevented Rafferty from releasing new material, but, after 3 years, the performer was finally able to sign with new label United Artists.
In 1978, Rafferty released 'City to City'. The album contained the global hit "Baker Street". Written by Rafferty, the song stood out immediately because of the rhapsodic sax solo by Raphael Ravenscroft. The saxophonist went on to play on recordings by ABBA, Marvin Gaye, America, Pink Floyd and Kim Carnes. Rafferty co-produced the single with Hugh Murphy.
In Britain the disc reached #3. In the USA, it spent 6 weeks peaking at #2. It went to #1on the Australian chart. Rafferty continued recording. His final album came out in 2000. Rafferty died in 2011 of liver disease.

#747 COLOUR MY WORLD Petula Clark
Petula Clark was born in 1932 in England. During the 1960s, the singer enjoyed a string of hits not only in her homeland, but was one of the few females to benefit from the British pop Invasion in the USA. Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent had penned other songs for Clark. Released as a single in 1966, "Colour my World" reached the Top 20 in America, Canada and New Zealand. It fared even better in Australia, peaking at #10.

Mention has already been made on this blog of Paul Simon's ability to draw inspiration from various genres, cultures and musicians. On "Love me Like a Rock", Simon incorporates gospel. He penned the song himself. On it, he is joined by the legendary Dixie Hummingbirds. This gospel vocal group formed in 1928. The track was recorded at the famous Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and was included on his 'There Goes Rhymin' Simon' LP. Released as a single in 1973, it climbed to #2 in America.

(MID-WEEK BONUS) #753-749
#753 WHEN I GET YOU ALONE Thicke
Robin Thicke was born in L.A. in 1977 to TV celebrity couple Gloria Loring (from "the soap Days of Our Lives") and Alan Thicke (from the sitcom "Growing Pains"). Aged only 14, Robin impressed R&B singer Brian McKnight with a demo. The boy's first taste of success was as a songwriter, creating songs for the likes of Christina Aguilera, Brandy, Color Me Badd and Mya. In 2002, Thicke released the single "When I Get You Alone". The hit sampled the instrumental "A Fifth of Beethoven" by Walter Murphy & the Big Apple. That 1976 disco hit was also featured on the 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack. Based loosely on Beethoven's Symphony #5, the original instrumental recording was reworked by Murphy. Thicke added lyrics to the track. In the US, the singer's revamp peaked at #8. It also reached the Top 10 in the Netherlands and New Zealand. The track was included on his 'A Beautiful World'. The woman featured on its cover later became his wife.
Thicke enjoyed greater popularity with his 2013 single "Blurred Lines". This song, which features guest vocals from Pharrell Williams, proved irresistible and reached #1 in countries that include Britain, America, Australia, New Zealand, France and Canada.

#752 LET LOVE RULE Lenny Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz was born in New York in 1964. Musically, he had been exposed to an array of styles and legendary performers that included Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald throughout his childhood. His biggest influence was Prince and Kravitz adopted the Purple One's skill in fusing many genres to forge new sounds. In 1987, the young singer married Lisa Bonet who was in the cast of hit TV series "The Cosby Show".
1989 saw Kravitz release his debut LP, 'Let Love Rule'. The title track was penned and produced by the musician. Some other tracks on the album were co-written by Bonet. Sadly, their marriage came to an end in 1993. As his musical career has continued, Kravitz has branched out into acting, with roles in films such as 'Precious', 'The Hunger Games' and 'The Butler'.

#751 THE END OF THE WORLD Agnetha Faltskog
If few singers do heartache and love within the same song the way Agnetha Faltskog can, the idea for her to cover "The End of the World" was an obvious and appropriate choice. Faltskog recorded her remake for the 2004 album 'My Colouring Book'. The song consists of music composed by Arthur Kent with Sylvia Dee's lyrics. Skeeter Davis recorded the original hit version of the ballad in 1963.

#750 SO YOU WIN AGAIN Hot Chocolate
Hot Chocolate enjoyed a lengthy string of hits, beginning with "Love is Life" in 1970. Though they were often pigeonholed as merely a disco group, their music incorporated rock, funk, gospel and pop in general. "So You Win Again" has traces of disco and funk, but it is a slower song. Lead singer Errol Brown wrote most of their hits, but Hot Chocolate finally reached #1 in the UK in 1977 with this Russell Ballard composition.

#749 GRACE KELLY Mika
Michael Penniman was born in 1983 in Beirut, Lebanon. By the age of 9, the boy had lived in Paris, France before relocating again in London, UK. His troubled childhood led the youth to find solace in music. Drawing inspiration from Freddie Mercury, Elton John and The Scissor Sisters, Mika the singer/ songwriter emerged.
In 2006, he issued his debut single "Relax, Take it Easy". This song made the charts in his adopted home and reached #1 in Belgium, France and the Netherlands. The follow-up single, written by Mika with Jodi Marr, John Merchant and Dan Warner, was "Grace Kelly". The singer plays keyboards on the song. He co-produced the track with Greg Wells who can be heard on drums and guitar. The song topped the charts in Britain, Belgium, Ireland, Italy and Norway. It also made Top 3 in Australia, Switzerland and Austria in 2007.
The song title of course refers to the Oscar winning actress Grace Kelly who left behind her Hollywood film career to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco. The chorus mentions a "Freddie" and this is a reference to Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury, a major influence on Mika's vocals. The track can be found on his debut album 'Life in Cartoon Motion'.

(MID-WEEK BONUS) #758-754
#758 READY FOR LOVE India.Arie
'Acoustic Soul' was the breathtaking debut album from Motown artist India.Arie. Aged 25 at the time of its release in 2001, the talent was already obvious. "Ready for Love" is an album track that showcases the singer's vocal texture. The song, written and produced by Arie with Blue Miller, finds the protagonist wanting a relationship. Aware of the highs and lows that love promises, this is a woman prepared for a commitment.

#757 IT'S RAINING MEN The Weather Girls
Paul Jabara was the songwriter responsible for the disco hits "Last Dance" and "No More Tears (Enough is Enough) by Donna Summer (the latter a duet with Barbra Streisand). He co-wrote "It's Raining Men" with Paul Schaffer. The latter is the bandleader for David Letterman's "The Late Show".
It is said that the song was offered to divas including Summer, Streisand, Cher and even Diana Ross. In the end, it was given to Two Tons of Fun. This female duo consisted of Martha Wash and Izora Redman - Armstead. They released the single in 1983. It was included on their LP 'Success'. By now, the women were working under the name The Weather Girls.
Although the song swiftly became a gay anthem and still packs a dancefloor, it was not a major hit song around the world. In the UK, however, the single did reach #2. It made the Top 20 in Australia but failed to crack the Top 40 in the US.
The Weather Girls struggled to follow up this release with another unforgettable song. Wash went on to contribute her (uncredited) vocals on subsequent dance hits by Black Box and C+C Music Factory. In 1998, she recorded an update entitled "It's Raining Men... The Sequel" with RuPaul.
Jabara died in 1994. Redman - Armstead passed away in 2004. The song finally reached #1 in Britain 3 years later, this time as a remake by Geri Halliwell.

#756 EVERY SHADE OF BLUE Bananarama
The female trio Bananarama formed in London in 1981. The following year saw the group appear on the Top 40 for the first time. An impressive string of hits followed, including "Shy Boy", "Robert de Niro's Waiting", "Venus", "Love in the First Degree", "I Want You Back" and "I Heard a Rumour". By 1988, line-up changes started, until the group re-emerged as a duo with original members Keren Woodward and Sara Dallin. Siobhan Fayey (the third founding member) has re-joined the others for special events.
It was as a duo that Bananarama recorded their 1995 single "Every Shade of Blue" for the 'Ultra Violet' album. The song was written by the 2 members with Paul Barry, Steve Torch and Gary Miller. The latter produced the entire album. Although the single failed to attract strong sales, it has helped the female group enjoy a rare longevity. They still record to this day.

#755 LIVIN' THING Electric Light Orchestra
ELO's 'A New World Record' LP was packed with tracks that were lifted as singles or became radio staples. This helped it become one of the best sellers of the 1970s. Lead singer Jeff Lynne wrote and produced the album's 9 songs, "Livin' Thing" among them. It proved to be one of the group's biggest singles, reaching #1 in South Africa and peaking at #2 in Australia. In Britain, the single climbed to #4 and it made #13 in the US.

#754 WALK THIS WAY Run-D.M.C. featuring Steve Tyler & Joe Perry
There are some recordings that mark a shift in public perception. "Walk This Way" is one such example. Until its release in 1986, rap had failed to crossover and attract a mainstream audience. The rap trio Run -D.M.C. formed in 1982 and 1 of its members Run (Joseph Simmons) teamed up with his friend Darryl McDaniels (hence the name Run- D.M.C.). They added another friend, Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay).
Joey's brother had by then formed the Def Jam record label with Rick Rubin. The following year saw the release of "It's Like That". The trio's version of rap was beginning to gain ground, resulting in impressive hits on the American R&B chart.
Mainstream audiences came to the party with the release of their rap remake of an Aerosmith song. "Walk This Way" featured that legendary rock band's lead singer Steve Tyler on guest vocals and its guitarist Joe Perry added his cherished riff. Rock fans loved the fusion with hip hop. Both Aerosmith members had penned the original which reached #10 in 1976. Joey's brother Russell and Rubin co-produced the track.
The track was included on the 'Raising Hell' LP, the first rap album to go platinum. On the US Hot 100, the single peaked at #4, the first rap song to crack the Top 10. Rap had arrived. Today, hip hop is the dominant genre in Western popular music.
Aerosmith benefitted greatly from the revamp. Its success revived interest in the group and they have enjoyed consistent hits since the Run-D.M.C. collaboration, including "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)", "Love in an Elevator", "Janie's Got a Gun" and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing".

#759 STOP DRAGGIN' MY HEART AROUND Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
1981 saw Stevie Nicks release her first solo album, while on hiatus from Fleetwood Mac. 'Bella Donna' was the result and an impressive collection of songs with which to launch her new venture. The first single lifted off this LP was "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around". Tom Petty wrote the song with Mike Campbell, a member of his backing band The Heartbreakers. The group joined Nicks on the track. Petty produced it with Jimmy Iovine. The single was a smash hit, peaking at #3 in America, #5 in Canada and #10 in Australia. Nicks followed the single with more hits, including "Edge of Seventeen", "Stand Back", "Talk to Me" and "I Can't Wait". Along with solo recordings, she remains a member of Fleetwood Mac.

I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression.
A new song is added twice daily and now with a mid-week bonus of 10 songs every Wednesday.
I hope you find some new tracks to love or re-discover some past favourites.

#760 MINUTE BY MINUTE The Doobie Brothers
"Minute by Minute" is another example of Michael McDonald taking The Doobie Brothers down a new musical direction. It is a soulful track McDonald penned with Lester Abrams. The latter is a performer, songwriter and producer. He has worked with not only The Doobie Brothers, but also Rufus, The Average White Band and Manfred Mann. The single peaked at #14 in America and was the title track from The Doobies' 1979 album.
Ironically, the track was nominated for Song of the Year but missed out on the Grammy Award. The recipient was another song co-written by McDonald and recorded by the group, "What a Fool Believes".

#761 WHEN WE WAS FAB George Harrison
In 1987, George Harrison revisited his past as a member of The Beatles on record for a second time, (following "All Those Years Ago"). In this instance, the mood was more upbeat. The title "When We Was Fab" refers to the Fab Four, as The Beatles were also known. There are lyrical and musical references to the group scattered throughout the song. Harrison co-wrote and co-produced the Top 40 hit with Jeff Lynne. The Beatles had been a major influence on the latter and inspired the formation of his group, Electric Light Orchestra.
Harrison and Lynne not only collaborated on his album 'Cloud Nine' which contained the hit, but also became founding members of the Traveling Wilburys with Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. In 1995, Lynne produced a new release from The Beatles, "Free as a Bird". This single was a demo by John Lennon on which the surviving Beatles contributed.

#762 FROM NEW YORK TO L.A. Patsy Gallant
Patsy Gallant was born in New Brunswick, Canada in 1950. Initially, she performed with her sisters, but launched a solo career in 1967. She recorded in both English and French, making her chart debut in 1972. Outside of Canada, she is remembered as a one-hit wonder. That sole chart success was her disco-flavoured single "From New York to L.A.". The hit was written by Gene Williams and Gilles Vigneault. In 1977, the disc reached the Top 10 not only in her homeland, but also the UK and Australia. Despite the song dealing with being famous on both sides of the USA, the single flopped in America. A later notable chart hit in Canada is "Sugar Daddy" which saw her emerge victorious at the 1978 Juno Awards.

#763 I CAN'T LET GO Linda Ronstadt
Linda Ronstadt was one of the major successes of the 1970s. She scored considerable hits that included "Blue Bayou", "It's So Easy" and the US #1 "You're No Good". Ronstadt entered the Eighties with a new direction on her 'Mad Love' album. Included were covers of 3 Elvis Costello songs and 1 by Neil Young. This led to a more punk-oriented feel. "How Do I Make You" and "Hurt So Bad" preceded the release of 3rd single "I Can't Let Go". The latter was a remake of a 1966 hit single by The Hollies. The song was penned by Chip Taylor and Al Gorgoni. The former is the brother of actor Jon Voight. He also wrote "Wild Thing" for The Troggs and "Angel of the Morning" for Merilee Rush.
Following her Top 40 success with "I Can't Let Go" in 1980, Ronstadt recorded in many other genres. This resulted in more chart appearances with songs like "What's New" (with The Nelson Riddle Orchestra) in 1983, "Somewhere Out There" (a duet with James Ingram) in 1986 and "Don't Know Much" (a collaboration with Aaron Neville) 3 years later.

#764 WHEN I KISSED THE TEACHER Abba
ABBA entrenched themselves as global dominators with their most complete album to date, 'Arrival'. Released in 1976, the LP opens with "When I Kissed The Teacher". Male members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus created this song which deals with a schoolgirl's crush on her teacher. Suddenly, unable to control herself, she plants a kiss on the object of her affection. Along with writing it, the pair produced the track. Agnetha, usually brilliant with ABBA's most poignant songs, delivers the lead vocal for this cheerful and upbeat recording. Few adults could have pulled this off without sounding ridiculous, but that is the genius of ABBA.

"Here We Go" was the 2nd single off the C+C Music Factory album 'Gonna Make You Sweat', released in 1990. The single swiftly became a dance hit as well as crossing over to the pop mainstream. In the USA, the track peaked at #3 Pop, #1 Dance and #7 R&B/Hip Hop. It was written by Robert Clivilles with rapper Freedom Williams. The latter namechecks rock legends such as Bo Diddley, The Who, The Jackson 5, B.B King, The Doors and The Rolling Stones. Clivilles co-produced the recording with David Cole, who passed away in 1995 of spinal menangitis. His death inspired Mariah Carey, who had many hits produced by Clivilles & Cole, to write a song which would later evolve into "One Sweet Day", a very successful collaboration with Boyz II Men.

#767 DEAD EYES OPENED Severed Heads
One of the most creative electronica recordings, "Dead Eyes Opened" came from Sydney act Severed Heads. Forming in 1979, the act began making inroads under the direction of member Tom Ellard. It was he who wrote the song which was first recorded for inclusion on their 1983 album 'Since the Accident'. Years later, the track was remixed by Robert Racic. This 1994 new version sampled crime writer Edgar Lustgarten reading on his radio show from "Death on the Crumbles". The single cracked the Top 40. Its follow up was "Heart of the Party". Ellard declared the group's termination in 2008. It is still an engaging recording, with its unique marriage of electronica and industrial / alternative dance with Lustgarten's narration.

#768 WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES Doobie Brothers
Following the departure of key member Tom Johnston, The Doobie Brothers were attempting to fill the void and create new material. Michael McDonald had recently joined the group and had not  written for some time; but he was scrambling through some old ideas. Amongst them was the genesis of what would become one of the group's biggest hits: "What A Fool Believes". McDonald recounted to me in an interview: "I must have had it for a couple of years where I just couldn't seem to finish it". He played a demo of it to producer Ted Templeman who recognized its potential as a hit single. One day, when McDonald was to write songs with Kenny Loggins, the latter arrived and heard him playing the unfinished piece at the piano. Upon hearing it, Loggins declared that he wanted to help him complete the song. It was their first collaboration.
Once it was completed, both recorded a version of the song. Loggins' recording was the first presented to the public. It appeared on his mid-1978 LP 'Nightwatch'. McDonald recorded his version with the Doobie Brothers for their 'Minute By Minute' album which followed a few months later. It's a far superior and more soulful performance, reaching #1 in America in April 1979 and winning Grammy Awards for Record & Song of the Year.
Loggins went on to establish himself with a solo career that saw him reach #1 in his own right with "Footloose", the title song from the hit 1984 film. Other hits included: "I'm Alright", "Danger Zone" and "Nobody's Fool".

#770 THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMM... C+C Music Factory featuring Freedom Williams
C+C Music Factory was a project that revolved around 2 dance producers/ remixers, Robert Clivilles and David Cole (the C & C in the act's moniker). The 2 came together in 1989 and set about gathering musicians and vocalists to record the songs that became the group's debut album. 'Gonna Make You Sweat' was unleashed in the following year. One of its tracks, "Things That Make You Go Hmmmm...", was inspired by a phrase used by Arsenio Hall. The song was written by Clivilles with Freedom (aka Frederick) Williams. The latter raps the story of a protagonist realizing that his partner has been cheating on him with his friend. Released as the third single from their 1990 album, the disc made the top 10 in the US, UK and Australia. Both Cole and Clivilles helped produce the track.

(MID-WEEK BONUS) #775-771
#775 GONE AWAY The Offspring
Although The Offspring can be dismissed easily due to their later goofy songs like "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" and "Why Don't You Get A Job?", they did deliver some underrated songs that deserve respect. "Gone Away" is a prime example. Inspired by a tragic event, it is one of the best examples of 1990s songwriting. The track was written by lead vocalist Dexter Holland after his girlfriend died in a car accident. His intense sense of loss is encapsulated powerfully in his lyrics and vocal treatment. Released in 1997, the single peaked at #16 in Australia.

#774 AT THE DARK END OF THE STREET Percy Sledge
Percy Sledge will be forever remembered for one of soul music's best love songs: When A Man Loves a Woman". It is because of its timeless quality that other songs from the R&B vocalist's songbook get overlooked. As great as that track is, Sledge recorded a touching and raw version of "At the Dark End of the Street". This song, written by Dan Penn and Chips Moman, has been cut by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Andrew Strong (for 'The Commitments' soundtrack) and Billy Bragg. Sledge strips it right back, letting the lyrics take the spotlight, as he sings about the need for discretion and secrecy in his love affair. As the song progresses, he continues that it is a matter of time before they are caught, but he longs to meet his secret lover again, away from the crowds and light. Sledge's version was included on his 'The Percy Sledge Way' album which came out in 1967.

#773 PRESSURE Billy Joel
Released in 1982, 'The Nylon Curtain' album found Billy Joel pursuing new musical directions in light of the new decade. "Pressure", from the LP, sees the musician switch from his trademark piano to synthesizer. Joel penned the song. Phil Ramone handled production duties.

#772 IN A MINOR KEY Tim Finn
Taking a break from Split Enz, Tim Finn worked on a solo album. The result was 'Escapade', unleashed in 1983. The lead single was "Fraction Too Much Friction", followed by "Made My Day" and "Staring at the Embers"- all of which made the Top 40. Recorded in Sydney, Australia, the LP also proved a success. Its 4th single was the melancholy track "In A Minor Key". This song was penned by Finn. Production was by Mark Moffatt and Ricky Fataar.

#771 LAUGHTER IN THE RAIN Neil Sedaka
Neil Sedaka was attempting to revive his solo career when he wrote "Laughter in the Rain". He had decided to end his songwriting collaboration with Howard Greenfield and was soon penning songs with Phil Cody. Having just signed to Elton John's Rocket Records, the timing was right for an American comeback. His debut album for the new label was 'Sedaka's Back'. Its first single was "Laughter in the Rain", a song the 2 wrote in London. Sedaka co-produced it with Robert Appere. In 1974, the song returned the singer/ songwriter to the top in the US for the first time since 1962.

(MID-WEEK BONUS) #780-776
#780 NOBODY'S DIARY Yazoo
The duo Yazoo was known simply as Yaz in the USA. Consisting of Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke, the synth pop act soon broke through with the singles "Only You", "Situation" and "Don't Go". These were all featured on their well received debut LP 'Upstairs at Eric's', issued in 1982. Their follow-up album 'You and Me Both' came out in 1983 and included the electronic ballad "Nobody's Diary". The song was penned by lead singer Moyet.
While the duo ceased collaborating soon after, both members have continued creating music. Moyet launched an enduring solo career. Clarke, who had already been a founding member of Depeche Mode, later formed Erasure with Andy Bell. This male duo scored hits which include "Oh L' Amour", "Sometimes", "A Little Respect" and "Chains of Love".

#779 SWEET, SWEET LOVE Russell Morris
Russell Morris started his musical career in 1966 as a member of Somebody's Image. He is still performing and recording music to this day. By the end of the 1960s, he had established himself as one of Australia's leading singer/ songwriters. His peak was reached in 1969 with the Johnny Young penned "The Real Thing". This milestone in Australian music was produced by Ian "Molly" Meldrum. With this song, Morris made inroads into the USA.
"Sweet Sweet Love" is a tender love song written by Morris and released in 1971. The track was included on his critically acclaimed 'Bloodstone' LP. This album featured some of the best musicians in Australia, including Phil Manning, Rick Springfield and Mark Kennedy. The ballad peaked at #7 on the Australian chart.

#778 FOR YOUR EYES ONLY Sheena Easton
The James Bond franchise has spawned some stellar moments as far as movie title songs go. When 007's new adventure emerged in 1981, singer Sheena Easton had just scored hit singles which included "Modern Girl" and "9 to 5 (Morning Train)". The latter was a global chart topper. The new Bond movie capitalized on her popularity and thus Easton came to join an impressive list of 'Bond' song performers like Tom Jones, Lulu, Nancy Sinatra, Paul McCartney and of course, Shirley Bassey.
"For Your Eyes Only" was written by Michael Leeson and Bill Conti. The latter produced the track and had enjoyed success in his own right, having reached #1 in the USA with his theme from the box office hit film 'Rocky', "Gonna Fly Now" and he created the theme music for the new prime time TV soap "Dynasty".

#777 DIM ALL THE LIGHTS Donna Summer
"Dim all the Lights" was released in 1979, on the back of 2 consecutive number one singles by Donna Summer: "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls". The track was lifted off Summer's hit album 'Bad Girls' and was penned by her. The production -handled by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte- gives the song its buoyancy. It peaked at #2. Summer revealed later that the song was intended for Rod Stewart before she recorded it herself!

#776 I WAS MADE TO LOVE HER Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder recorded "I Was Made To Love Her" when he was aged 16. His vocals reveal his gift and maturity. The song was co-written by Wonder with input from 3 other songwriters: Henry Cosby, Sylvia Moy and Lula Mae Hardaway. The former 2 were regular Motown staffers who contributed some staples to the Motown catalogue. The latter was Wonder's mother. She also helped write "Signed, Sealed Delivered (I'm Yours)", another hit for her son. Hardaway died aged 76 in 2006.
"I Was Made To Love Her" was issued as a single in 1967 and peaked at #2 for a fortnight on the US Top 100. On the R&B chart, the disc ruled the top for a month. Cosby produced the cut. It was the title track from his next album release.

#781 EL CONDOR PASA (IF I COULD) Simon & Garfunkel
Paul Simon has cleverly drawn inspiration from a diverse range of musical sources; most famously on the 'Graceland' LP where he incorporated rhythms and musicians from South Africa. Years earlier, Simon adapted an 18th century folk song to form "El Condor Pasa".
Its original source was Peru, the melody created by Daniel Alomia Robles and adapted later by Jorge Milchberg. Simon penned the English lyrics. Los Incas perform the music on this track from the monumental best selling LP 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'. The song was released as a single in 1970, reaching #1 in many European countries and in Australia.

#782 SATURDAY IN THE PARK Chicago
Chicago would shift musical gears following this single, the last to prominently feature the group's jazz application. It's all here: a bouncy beat, those soaring horns and rays of sunlight bursting through the speakers. The lyrics - from group member Robert Lamm - perfectly paint the scene... a sunny summer's day in a busy park.
The single was released in 1972 from 'Chicago V'. On the US chart, the disc peaked at #3. Subsequent singles generally leaned towards an adult contemporary direction, including ballads such as "If You Leave Me Now", "You're the Inspiration" and "Look Away".

#783 LOVER MAN (OH, WHERE CAN YOU BE?) Barbra Streisand
"Lover Man" is a song closely associated with the legendary Billie Holiday, for whom Jimmie Davis, Roger "Ram" Ramirez and Jimmy Sherman wrote the standard. Barbra Streisand included her version of the tune on 'Simply Streisand'. This album was issued in late 1967. It was produced by Jack Gold and Howard A. Roberts. The track finds the gifted vocalist in her element. The music is subtle, allowing Streisand to shine through with her jazz treatment; as she pines for a man's love.

#784 BAMBOLEO The Gipsy Kings
The Gipsy Kings are steeped in tradition but managed to inject a fresh contemporary enthusiasm to their sound at the time of their international conquest with hits like "Bamboleo". The group formed in Arles, France in 1979, comprising 2 sons of respected flamenco performer Jose Reyes and their 3 cousins. Having adopted a gypsy-like lifestyle, the band's name eventually became The Gipsy Kings. Their first 2 albums fared poorly, but the group persisted. Redefining their sound with a modern approach, this new musical direction spawned new songs which soon caught on with audiences around the world.
"Bamboleo" was penned by lead singer Nicolas Reyes with guitarists Tonino Baliardo (1 of his cousins) and Jahloul "Chico" Bouchikhi. The song was recorded for the group's 1988 self-titled LP. The single was a Top 10 hit in Europe and peaked at #19 in Australia.

#785 YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE Gerry & The Pacemakers
Liverpool was as pivotal a city in Sixties pop as Detroit. It was the cradle of the British Invasion and the place of origin for acts such as The Beatles, The Searchers, Billy J. Kramer and Gerry & The Pacemakers. The latter recorded a version of a song from the musical "Carousel" which, over time, has become intrinsically linked with the Merseyside city.
"Carousel" opened on Broadway in 1945. "You'll Never Walk Alone" is the standout musical number from the show, sung by a dead character named Billy. The song features lyrics from Oscar Hammerstein II set to music composed by Richard Rodgers. It was an inspiring song for its time in history, after the Second World War.
Over the decades, it had been covered by a wide array of artists, including Frank Sinatra, Doris Day Judy Garland, Roy Hamilton, Conway Twitty and Tony Sheridan. In 1963, Gerry & The Pacemakers recorded their timeless version. Lead singer Gerry Marsden's unique vocals - limitations and all - endeared the remake to the public and the group was rewarded with 4 weeks at #1 in the UK. This version will forever be associated with soccer clubs, especially the Liverpool football team.

#786 MOONLIGHT FEELS RIGHT Starbuck
The group Starbuck formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1974. Many of its members had previously worked together in other bands such as Eternity's Children and Extravaganza. By 1975, they were signed to Private Stock and singer / keyboard player Bruce Blackman came up with the breakthrough song "Moonlight Feels Right". When first released, the single flopped. A DJ in Alabama gave the song airplay in the following year and local popularity soon grew into a #3 hit song on the American pop chart. They enjoyed 4 other chart appearances, but never came close to the Top 20 again. Starbuck split in 1980.

#787 MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE Adele
In 1997, Bob Dylan released his critically acclaimed 'Time Out Of Mind' album. One of its highlight tracks is "Make You Feel My Love". The love song was penned by the legendary songwriter himself. A version by Billy Joel was the first heard by the public, preceding the Dylan original by a few months.
In 2008, British singer Adele unleashed her debut album '19'. The young songbird included a remake of the song on the well received set. Gone was the gritty, uneven vocal approach of the original. Adele's sweet and soulful vocals were complemented by a gentle piano and strings. Dylan's lyrics are allowed to shine as never before thanks to the precision in her execution of the song.
