#874 THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD The Beatles
When Paul McCartney wrote "The Long and Winding Road" he was pondering where The Beatles found themselves at the start of 1969. The group had dominated the music scene and, in many ways , western pop culture, since 1964. Now, as the decade was nearing an end, the group was severely fractured. His lyrics urged the other 3 members to put aside their differences and persevere as a band. In the uncertain months that followed, renowned producer Phil Spector was asked to produce the tracks that were to become the group's final album, 'Let It Be', released in 1970.
The ballad was meant to be understated and simple. When McCartney heard how Spector had transformed the song, with its lush orchestration and choir, he was furious. It has been claimed that it was this lack of consultation that finally led McCartney to decide it was time for The Beatles to come to an end.
