#1006 CAN'T STAND LOSING YOU The Police
The Police formed in 1977. The trio came close to cracking the Top 40 in their native Britain that year with debut single "Fall Out". Follow-up "Roxanne" proved to be their breakthrough hit, charting around the world and piqued interest in their first LP, 'Outlandos D'Amour'. That 1978 album also contained their next single: "Can't Stand Losing You".
Even this early in the group's career, we were already seeing hints of Sting's clever use of words to create characters and themes that were diverse. The previous hit's protagonist had fallen in love with a sex worker. On the follow-up, Sting's song finds a man completely devastated by a break-up. Despite his tragic final decision to suicide, The Police manage to keep the mood light with punchy instrumentation and an upbeat reggae beat throughout.
