Disco was at its peak in 1977 and Motown was looking to capitalize on its popularity, encouraging several acts on their roster to record dance songs. Diana Ross, Bonnie Pointer and The Jacksons did so with success. Marvin Gaye had been enjoying the fruits of his reinvention earlier that decade; tackling social issues. 
That year, Gaye created a funky disco number that enhanced his list of musical credentials: "Got to Give it Up". The song dealt with his fear of dancing. The full length version ran for almost 12 minutes. It was tacked onto his 
'Live at the London Palladium' LP. Edited down for release as a single, it reached the top on the R&B, Pop and Disco charts.
In 2013, it was suggested that Robin Thicke's worldwide hit "Blurred Lines" evokes this classic song by Gaye.
