Part 8: 701- 800 (1992 - 2000)
The last years of the 20th century saw the music industry deal with dwindling singles sales and the continued expansion of the internet as a tool for music piracy and file sharing.
Amongst all this tumultuous change, some innovative acts reach the chart summit. Bobby Brown took new jack swing to the top with "Humpin' Around". Snow rapped his way to #1 with "Informer". Sweden's Ace of Base made number one twice. Boyz II Men returned harmony vocal groups to the top, followed by All -4- One. Grunge gained mainstream popularity via No. 1s by Silverchair. and Pearl Jam. Boy bands were represented by the likes of East 17, *NSYNC, and Take That. Females were reaching the top too, with groups like TLC, All Saints, Destiny's Child, B*Witched and the Spice Girls. Shaggy exposed mainstream audiences to dancehall. Country pop was revived by Shania Twain.
The 1992 Barcelona Olympics spawned a #1 hit duet for Jose Carreras & Sarah Brightman. Princess Diana's sudden death 5 years later resulted in a #1 for Puff Daddy and a global tribute hit by Elton John.
Janet became the second member of the Jackson clan to make the top. Will Smith reached #1 as part of the duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince and later as a soloist. Oasis reignited Brit-pop with their Beatlesque sound; while metal fans devoured hits by Metallica. Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez started their string of chart topping songs in 1999.
Celine Dion made #1 for the first time with "The Power of Love". Canada was also dominating the top spot courtesy of Bryan Adams, Jann Arden and Crash Test Dummies.
Australian acts also reigned over our pop charts with #1s from Killing Heidi, Merril Bainbridge and Savage Garden.
Movie hits included Whitney Houston's uber- ballad from 'The Bodyguard', "I Will Always Love You"; "Love is all Around" from '4 Weddings and a Funeral' and Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" from the Batman franchise. Aerosmith returned to the top, with a song from 'Armageddon'. The box office champ, 'Titanic', saw Celine Dion top the charts here with "My Heart Will Go On".
Acts finally reaching the peak included Meat Loaf and Mariah Carey.
